300 AAC Blackout

Description

From a wild cat cartridge developed by J.D. Jones of SSK Industries in 1992 by necking up a .221 fireball case to accept a .30 cal. bullet or by cutting down a 5.56mm case, the goal was to push a 200 – 250 grain bullet at subsonic speeds of an AR / M16 platform suppressed. The cartridge named the 300 Whisper was copywritten, but it never took off possibly for fear of some sort of infringement. So, it remained a niche wildcat round until 2009 when along came Advanced Armament Corporation (AAC) and the 300 Blackout. By this time the information was now in public domain, so AAC submitted the specs to the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute for SAMMI certification. This opened the door for anyone to manufacture rifles and ammunition without a licensing fee or fear of intellectual property infringement. Anyone who has ever fired this cartridge out of a silenced weapon knows the excitement of hearing a 200-grain bullet smacking a steel plate at 100 yards!
